Old Sightings of Modern Pterosaurs

By the living-pterosaur author Jonathan Whitcomb

Many years ago, I tried (without success) to get in touch with Allison Jornlin, the writer of an article on a pterosaur sighting in Wisconsin: “PTERODACTYLS OVER WISCONSIN — STRANGE THINGS ARE HAPPENING IN THE SKY!” (copyright 2001). It’s no longer available on the angelfire.com site, but it can still be seen here:

Overview of that “Pterodactyl” Sighting in Wisconsin

Kevin paced the waiting room floor in the Elmbrook Memorial Hospital in Brookfield, Wisconsin, as his first child was about to be born. Looking out the window, however, he saw something unexpected arriving, and the news about it would not likely cause him to be congratulated.

The bat-like flying creature “was bigger than a full-size pickup truck, but smaller than a Piper Cub plane.” He soon ran out of words to describe it except for one: pterodactyl. He estimated that the wingspan was 12-15 feet.

“Pterodactyl” Sighting in Bowmansville, New York

On May 26th 2007, my friend and I were canoeing in the creek accessed from my back yard when we sighted a very strange creature that we had both thought to be a prehistoric bird. Immediately, I thought “pterodactyl”. It was a greyish color with no apparent feathers.

Pterosaur Sighting at Night in Ohio

The weather was absolutely beautiful and calm with a bright full moon,  not a cloud in the sky and it was the night of the Eclipse at 11:15 PM,  June 26th, 2010, and it was on Rt 309, Mile Marker 7 . . . I just can’t get this out of my mind. I did not know who to contact about it either so thank you [Jonathan Whitcomb] for your quick response.

“Greetings from Nicaragua” (*one of the sightings was in about 2009)

Hi Mr Whitcomb – Searching for information of pterosarus [sic] I found your web page and would like to
share with you a sighting . . . [from] more than *five years ago . . . [my wife and I were] amazed for the looks of the animal. Even though it was high in the sky, it seemed to be big and featherless. . . . Years went by and today speaking with a good friend he told me his wife and Sister in law had seen a big bird on a rainy day and that with his wings he produced a lot of wind and noise. They say that each wing could have measured 5 mts [total wingspan maybe over 30 feet], her sighting happened 17 years ago and was not in rural area [but] just 10 km away from the capital where I also saw it.

Pterosaur in Wisconsin

From the post “Frightening Pterosaur Sightings in the USA”

. . . it looked like something straight out of the dinosaurs era. It scared the . . . out of me right away. I knew it was not a sand hill crane . . . What stood out was the long pointed head and the fact that there was a very long tail between the legs and with a ball shaped on the end of it . . .

Pterodactyl near Buffalo, New York

It coasted in movement; I don’t recall the wings flapping. It was off into the distance, so size is difficult to determine. I would estimate the wing span to be six feet.

.

Ohio Pterosaurs

“I was driving on Route 309, just outside of Kenton, Ohio, perfectly clear night [full moon] . . . I had a creature swoop down and glide over my hood of my car. It glided smoothly and looked like a Pterodactyl . . .”

Pterosaur Sighting in Nicaragua

For the past eleven years, I (Jonathan Whitcomb) have interviewed eyewitnesses of apparent pterosaurs from various areas of the world. Many of those whom I have questioned report a flying creature resembling what my associates and I call ropens.

Until four years ago, I had mostly avoided using the “Pteranodon photo” in my writings. Part of my reluctance was in thinking that it appeared too good to be true . . .

Pterosaurs in Ohio

Sightings of pterosuars in Ohio include the Antwerp case that was covered in a newspaper story a few months ago:

“He described it like a pterosaur, according to a recently-published book, ‘Live Pterosaurs in America.'” The creature was reported “chasing sparrows as it flew over the Route 49 bridge near Antwerp, Ohio.” The author found credibility in the testimony. . . . Few major newspapers have published eyewitnesses accounts of apparent living-pterosaurs, at least in recent years. As reported in the Antwerp Bee-Argus, they “have been thought by many scientists to have gone extinct many millions of years ago,” that is, the pterosaurs, not yet major newspapers. [quotations from the Ohio newspaper article about the sightings of a living pterosaur]

Of course, this seems to have little relationship to the title of this blog: The Bible and Living Pterosaurs. One eyewitness in Ohio, however, was a minister; the sighting was in 2005:

[in Mount Vernon, Ohio] “I was coming to preach at a church out in the country. . . . I [noticed] a creature in the sky. . . . It appeared to have no feathers . . . [the tail was] longer than most bird tails . . . with a diamond-shaped point at the end.” [from Pterosaurs in the Bible]

The Antwerp, Ohio, sightings are covered in detail in the nonfiction cryptozoology book Live Pterosaurs in America. But sightings of apparent living pterosaurs in the United States are hardly confined to Ohio; other sightings have been reported in California, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, South Carolina, New York, Maine, Michigan, Kansas, and other states.
